INTERVIEW TRES INTERESSANTE

SIDDHARTH Siddardhpm0

Tell us about your background?
I was born in Chennai. My schooling was divided between mount St. Mary's Delhi, DAV Chennai and SPV delhi. I finished my B.Com (Hons.) in KMC, Delhi. I went on to complete my MBA from the S.P.Jain institute of Management in Mumbai.

How you got interested in films?
I have been fascinated with films for as long as I can remember. My parents were responsible for exposing me to excellent films when I was very young. I always wanted to know how films were made. Curiosity turned to passion, and I decided I wanted to write and direct movies. When I wanted to make a foray into films after school, my father rightly made me complete my graduation and my masters. He always believed the uncertainty in cinema warranted a solid backup plan. My education is my backbone. I will always cherish the fact that it has shaped me into who I am. I pursued amateur theater in Delhi, and that helped me get in touch with my creative facets. But I never intended to act in films at that stage. I was only looking at writing and directing.

How did you get a break as hero?
After the release of Kannathil Muthamittal (Amritha in Telugu), writer Sujatha Rangarajan wanted me to meet Shankar regarding Boys. I met Shankar, he auditioned me, and I got Boys. I wasn't sure if I wanted to act at that stage. I expressed my doubt to Mani Ratnam. He was instrumental in making me accept Boys. He felt the experience would be invaluable as I would get to see commercial filmmaking from close range.

You worked youth-oriented characters in all 3 films so far. And your body language suited them perfectly. Are you contemplating on doing different characters?
I have played three youngsters between the ages of 18 and 22. I refuse to believe that is not different. I would like to clarify here that acting is not always about transformation. In our country and indeed even in the holy 'oscars', acting is judged based on how much the actor physically transforms himself. This means that the best acting roles should involve handicaps, prosthetic make-up, and excessive shades of drama. I think it is equally challenging differentiating 3 youngsters, one who is middle cass, one who is upper middle class, and one who is an NRI. I don't see any similarity between my Munna, Arjun and Santosh. I am now doing a very exciting Hindi/English film called 'Rang De Basanti'. This is a very challenging role. I am still playing a youngster, but the challenge is in giving him an identity of his own.

You speak pretty good Telugu. How did you learn it? And what prompted you to dub your character yourself? Which other languages you are fluent at?
I think screen acting is difficult enough when you know the language. I can't even imagine how hard it would be if you don't. I learnt Telugu in a few weeks by talking to people and watching TV. I even dubbed Yuva in Telugu for practice. I think half of my performance in NVNV should be attributed to my dubbing. The response has been extraordinary. I am fluent with Hindi as well. My next film is a live sound film in Hindi and English. I am proud of my linguistic versatility. I would love to learn new languages and explore new regional films.

Are you satisfied being a hero? Or do you want to direct films in future?
My current mantra is that I am acting with an aim to direct one day. My pedigree is becoming enviable. Shankar, Mani Ratnam, MS Raju, Prabhu Deva and now Aamir Khan and Rakesh Mehra. I am learning something all the time, and as a student of cinema, this is very convenient. Make no mistake, direction is definitely on the anvil. When and how, is anybody's guess!

Other than films, what do you like? Any hobbies?
Music is my life. At any time in my life, music defines how I am feeling and what I am thinking. Other than that, test cricket is something I am very seriously in love with. Then there's video games; I am an addict.

What are your favorite films?
Considering the sheer number of films I have watched and continue to watch, I can never pick favorites. I have a new top ten every week. I think it's important to watch films without judging them, and exposure to as many films as possible is always a good thing.

What did you learn as assistant to Mani Ratnam?
The golden rule about aiming for a career in films as far as I am concerned is to keep your expectations very, very low. Only then will you be able to take the disappointments. You have to learn everything yourself. Nobody is going to spoon feed you. Mani Ratnam is a great teacher because he creates an atmosphere conducive to learning. I took as much as I could from him. As an assistant, the ideal learning is to know the process of filmmaking from start to finish. Once that is done, it's a matter of getting the confidence and the right script to make a start in direction.

How helpful is the experience you got from Mani Ratnam for you as an actor?
Not just Mani Ratnam, every director helps shape an actor. When I was assisting Mani Ratnam, I was trying to learn direction, so I didn't think as an actor. However, being an assistant meant that I knew the medium once I took up acting, so I understood technicalities better. That didn't always help though.

How helpful is your MBA from prestigious institute in your professional career?
I think any education is always beneficial as nothing shapes character like education. My post graduation was instrumental in shaping me. It will always be a part of everything I do. In filmmaking, it helps me be more systematic and organized in the way I work.

How is it like working with Trisha in two consecutive films?
Trisha is a good friend, and there is a very strong mutual trust between us as actors. This trust is crucial, because once actors trust each other and their instincts, spontaneous performances become possible. Trisha is an actress hitting the top of her game in terms of acceptance. I look forward to seeing her grow more and more as an actress in the coming years. Our work in the two films we have done is completely different. It is hard for me to pick a favorite among the two, because I feel we managed to pull both off in very different ways.

Being the latest heartthrob, you must be chased by women these days? Tell us about the sweetest and most embarrassing situation you faced with female fans.
I am a very private person, so the fanfare hasn't and in all probably will not ever get to me. I prefer people judging me as an actor, as opposed to as a person. The female attention is something I have only heard of, mostly in interviews. I am much happier hearing about it this way! Like I said, I haven't gotten used to the adulation. I know it's a good thing and I am thankful to them for it. I hope I can sustain interest with my future performances.

How NVNV happened to you. And who do you give the credit of this stupendous success?
This film owes its success to the fantastic teamwork of M.S.Raju and Prabhu Deva. The former is an ultra-passionate maker who has extraordinary instincts in commercial film making. The latter is one of the most unique minds we have in this country. I expect even greater things from both of them individually and as a team.

How did you come up with funky hair-do for your character in NVNV?
I styled myself on instinct. I wanted to make Santosh very unique, maybe even confusing. The 60's style haircut in the first half is very much in vogue in London right now. I felt it gave him a sense of mischief. It also made him look cute and alien at the same time.

The second half was about not styling. If a boy was in a village for 3 months, he would just get up, wet his hair and go to work. So I didn't cut it, I just grew it and styled it back. It made him look mature and more grounded. I am so thrilled the look worked, because I would have had nobody to blame except myself if it hadn't!

What is your involvement as an actor in filmmaking?
I am lazy unless I am passionate about something. I sign films that fuel my passion, and that's why I give 200%! As an actor, I am very proactive. I believe in homework, in rehearsals, and in following up with consistency. I am trying to get better with each film. I assure you, I honestly believe I have a long way to go as an actor!

How is it like working with Amir Khan?
Aamir Khan is an inspiration. We have just started working together, and one thing I have realized is, no matter who stops thinking about the film, you can rest assured Aamir would be thinking about it. He is a hands-on actor, and I am very comfortable with him. His achievements have strangely made him very humble and easy to work with, which is a boon!

--------------------------------------------------

Meet Siddharth, of Rang De Basanti

SIDDHARTH 07siddharth2rb0

Siddharth may have bowled everyone over with his performance in Rang De Basanti but, when he moved to Chennai from Mumbai after an MBA from the S P Jain Institute of Management, acting was not part of his plans. It was thanks to his mentors, cinematographer P C Sreeram and his brother Jayendra, that he got a prized assignment -- that of assisting Mani Ratnam in Kannathil Muthamittal.

"I met Mani Ratnam for an interview and landed my first job in cinema. I am proud to be associated with a film as special as Kannathil Muthamittal. I saw and learnt the science of filmmaking from very close quarters," he told rediff.com years ago.

It was during that assignment that writer Sujatha and his wife saw him and recommended his name to Shankar who was casting for his film, Boys. Siddharth was auditioned, and signed on.

Though Boys did not set the Tamil Nadu box office on fire, it became a rage in Andhra Pardesh. Siddharth moved from Chennai to Hyderabad to concentrate on Telugu films. The biggest hit of his career was Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, directed by Prabhu Deva.

Now, with Rang De Basanti becoming a big hit, Siddharth may soon have a promising career in Bollywood. The 'reclusive actor' speaks to Shobha Warrier about his first Hindi film.

What was the Rang De Basanti experience like?

It has been the most enjoyable shoot of my career, mostly due to my relationship with director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. He is a wonderful technician and a very important influence in my life. I have learnt many things about myself as an actor and as a person through this film.

RDB works as a script and as a film, because of the wonderful core group and its chemistry, both on and off screen. Aamir Khan was the main catalyst in this process. He is a very secure actor and a very simple person. Rakeysh and Aamir ensured that everyone had a great time, and that shows in the film.

How much do you identify with the ideology of the film?

I don't do too many films. I have done four in as many years. After Boys, I did not want to sign a film I didn't believe in. This made it impossible for me to do many films. Aayitha Eyuthu, Nuvvo…, Chukkallo and RDB are very close to my heart, and I am proud of all of them. RDB is a very important event in Indian cinema. When I read the script, I knew it was going to be huge. The message is universal, and has been delivered in spectacular style.

Do you agree with the end of the film?

RDB leaves you with a sense of pride; of having seen something that makes you want to think, that makes you want to do. I did not feel sad when I saw the film. I felt the boys were liberated. It makes us want to fill their shoes and carry on the good work; to follow Karan's gospel that urges the youth to join politics, the civil services, armed forces, and to clean the system from the inside out.

Do you feel frustrated with the state of the affairs in the country?

I feel chaos is necessary to retain order. India is a vibrant country. Anything is possible here. Nothing frustrates me. I am a die-hard optimist. I believe there is huge scope for change and improvement. You can't ask for a better place to want to spend your life doing what you love doing. That's why I am here, doing the work I am doing.

Did you expect this kind of appreciation in a film that had so many actors?

I don't believe in the star system. I would have wasted the next 20 years of my life and career if I had tried to be a star. I am here to be a creative professional. Currently, I want to make my name as an acting talent to be reckoned with. I am proud of RDB. I signed on because I wanted to be part of something that had purpose. Everything else is just a bonus.

Would you act in more Hindi films, or will you concentrate only on Telugu cinema?

I am primarily concentrating on Telugu films. I have a responsibility to my fans there. If good work comes my way from Mumbai, I would definitely consider it. However, it is foolish to expect films like RDB. These kind of films are not made. They just happen in a very long time.

SIDDHARTH 07siddharth1jy7

When we spoke a little after Boys, you said you did not want to be an actor, and that you wanted to be a filmmaker. But you are acting more these days. Does it satisfy the creative person in you?

I still nurture dreams of becoming a director someday. I did not expect to be an actor. Now that it has happened, I want to be the best at it that I can be. I am learning everyday. As for direction, let's wait and see.

You wrote the script of Chukkallo Chandrudu. How familiar are you with the language and culture of Andhra Pradesh?

I wanted to make a film that was urban in its construct and execution. Chukkallo was an experiment. It was made to set up the foundation for modern, young cinema in Telugu. I am very happy with the response. I wrote it based on my knowledge of the Hyderabad I have seen and lived in. I love Hyderabad and its people. I think it shows in the film.

Do you look at script writing as a step to direction?

Not consciously. I wrote Chukkallo because I am a writer. I was a writer before I became an actor. I did not use my status as an actor to become a writer. I don't do anything with an eye on something else. If direction happens, it will be my first step in that realm. I don't think I can take any steps towards it now.

When you came to assist Mani Ratnam after an MBA, did you imagine you would be such a huge success?

I came into this line of work because this is my passion, and my dream. I definitely knew in my heart that I would be good at whatever I put my heart and soul into. Success is not a divine phenomenon. It rests firmly in your ability and ambition.

What do you attribute your success in films to -- talent or luck?

I don't believe in luck. I am a self-made man. I believe in my talent and hard work.

Yeh to Aamir ka bhi Baap Hai
SIDDHARTH Siddharth

Siddharth played the rebellious young millionaire’s son in Rang De Basanti but has made little headway in Bollywood and it’s all because of a head refusing to bow.

Filmmakers in Bollywood are appalled by Siddharth’s attitude as though he’s doing filmmakers a big favour.

Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan are known to be perfectionists, but he demands a hundred explanations before he descends down from his high horse.

The shocking news though is when David Dhawan offered him a part in his new film to be produced by UTV he asked for a bound script before taking the talks further.

David has never worked with a script, nor has any actor, from Mr Bachchan to Sanjay Dutt to Govinda to Salman Khan. No one has ever asked him for a script.

Apparently Siddharth has always had an attitude problem. He’s more like a management guy than an actor. He looks at projects like an industrialist examining business prospects. This may work in Chennai, but it won’t work in Mumbai.

Posted by Y. Sunita Chowdhary
SIDDHARTH 13

Post Aata Siddharth is in a big confusion as to what kinda film he has to do as he is stuck in an image wrap as people who’ve seen Aata have commented that the mass look didn’t suit Siddhu a bit. Siddharth is cautious as doing class films continuously might get him success but wouldn’t take his market anywhere as there is no increase in the market value even after the success of NVNV, Bommarillu, Aata (according to him it’s a hit).

He is very keen on working with Sukumar, Chandrasekhar Yeleti, Trivikram. Reportedly Chandrasekhar Yeleti is preparing a script for Siddhu and if he okays it would be the next part of Aata.

Et ben moi je dis ils savent pas ce qu'ils ratent...
Mais apparement ce David a tout de même finis par le prendre a Suddhu

Donc son nouveau film Hindi est avec Amrita Rao (que j'adore aussi)

'Hook Ya Crook'

Here’s a BIG scoop… as always on IndiaFM first!

Corporate entity UTV and the badshaah of entertainers David Dhawan have teamed up for a new project that’s titled HOOK YA CROOK. An offbeat title, right? Wait till you hear the star cast of the film and you’d agree that the casting is equally unusual: Siddharth and Amrita Rao.

Siddharth, who won tremendous acclaim for his performance in RANG DE BASANTI [also produced by UTV], will now appear in his second Hindi film and in a role that’s a far cry from the one essayed by him in R.D.B. Meanwhile, the makers are toying with the idea of casting a senior actor for a pivotal role and it could be Sanjay Dutt or Nana Patekar.

Besides a wacky title and an atypical star cast, there’s yet another unusual factor going. Rensil D’Silva, who wrote the script of RANG DE BASANTI, has penned the script for this David Dhawan film -- another first. “It’s the most interesting script to come out of UTV,” Siddharth Roy Kapur of UTV informs me.

What’s the film all about? “You can’t slot HOOK YA CROOK in any one particular genre. It’s a thriller, it has comedy in good doses, there’s a love story too… and cricket as well,” Siddharth enlightens. Principal shooting of the film is expected to commence in April 2007.
